Even if you’re a generous neighbor, a helpful coworker, or a trustworthy friend, you’ll still end up being taken advantage of.
A man shared a story about how he turned out to be the bad guy on Reddit.
He discovered the hard way that what began as a well-intentioned gesture turned into an unwanted beacon of entitlement.
The tale started when he and his fiancée moved into a small neighborhood.
The small neighborhood seemed fine right away.
He also observed that there were lots of children between the ages of 9 and 10.
The couple made the decision to purchase a pool after learning they were expecting a child.
They had no idea that this would spark a conflict with their neighbors.
They chose to purchase a pool.
He wrote in his post, “Last year, I had an above-ground pool installed, and the neighborhood kids were very happy.”
Being a good neighbor, he decided to let the kids use their facilities, but he did so with some restrictions.
He revealed, “I told them there were no dogs allowed in the pool as the lining was fragile and could break.
It appears to be a good offer.
After all, the kids are free to use the pool. The man claimed he didn’t charge an entrance fee, at least.
When they returned from their trip, however, everything was turned upside down.
He wrote in his post, “When we got back, I noticed the water level was low and tried to refill it. This year, I opened the pool and the kids used it while we were away.”
He discovered a “good-sized tear” on one side of the pool after further inspection, but he still had it fixed.
The following day, the kids returned.
They questioned him about using the pool. The man declined and informed the children that the pool was closed because he was thinking about the tear he had repaired and the fact that their Labrador retriever was also with them.
One day, when he returned, he overheard his neighbors arguing with his fiance.
Then, in an unbelievable turn of events, the neighbors claimed that because he forbade them from using his pool, it was saddening their children.
The neighbors demanded that he reopen the pool after he explained what had happened to them rather than showing understanding.
Commenters jumped to his defense right away.
One of them even demanded that the man never again permit the children on his property, citing the “attractive nuisance” law.
They claimed that given the response of their neighbors, they will unquestionably hold him legally responsible if anything bad happens to the kids.
“NTA and this situation overall are insurance nightmares. One commenter further cautioned, “Never ever never ever let anyone use your pool, especially when you’re not home. All it will take is one kid drowning and your lovely house and your lovely life will be gone. Install cameras and a pool cover after explaining that no one uses the pool any longer.
